HMRC have announced that later this year they will target tradesmen across the UK within a number of categories. These include:
- Window fitters
In fact, anyone who carries out a traditional tradesman’s job. This is an extension of the “plumbers’ amnesty” of 2010/11, which resulted in tax recoveries of over £4m for HMRC and at least ten arrests, with over 1,000 civil cases being prepared by HMRC lawyers.
The taxman will, we understand, be trawling the internet using new tracking technology to discover whether hundreds of thousands of tradesmen are registered with HMRC and are completing accurate, timely tax returns. Where appropriate, HMRC will offer tradesmen an ‘amnesty’ to declare previously omitted income or correct their returns where mistakes have been made.
The message is to tell HMRC about your affairs before they come to you, so as to avoid any risk of criminal proceedings. People who believe they need to make a voluntary disclosure should contact their professional adviser for assistance or call HMRC on 0845 601 5041.
