Heather Donald: Superstar Volunteer

We are proud to announce that our Marketing Assistant Heather Donald was recently presented with the prestigious Volunteer of the Year award at the Scottish Student Sport (SSS) Conference beating over 4,500 other volunteers to the honour on the 9th June 2015.

Heather is a recent graduate from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh with a BSc (Hons) degree in Psychology with Management. Throughout her four years at university she has had a passion for sport and has been involved in volunteering roles including Treasurer and Secretary for the University Rowing Club, an Ambassador for the Sports Union and a Marketing and Communications Intern for South-West Community Sport Hub.

Currently, there are around 4,500-5,000 student volunteers involved in Scottish Student Sport. Heather was nominated by Heriot-Watt University Sports Union for the award and then shortlisted by SSS to one of just three finalists.

Heather commented on her award, “I am delighted to be awarded Scottish Student Sport Volunteer of the Year 2014/2015. I was honoured to have been nominated by my University let alone to have then been shortlisted for the award! Winning was very unexpected (as many who were there can tell you by the look of shock on my face!) and it was an added bonus to an already spectacular evening.”

“I became involved in Volunteering at University because I wanted to meet new people, become more involved in sport at Heriot-Watt and to help get more students involved in sport within Scotland. I have loved every minute of every role I have had throughout my time at University and how rewarding each role has been. To then receive awards for my work on top of the experience and memories I have gained is a bonus and an honour.”

Further congratulations about the award came from Heather’s University Rowing Team and Scottish Rowing alongside her former boss, Chris Sellar, South-West Edinburgh Community Sport Hub Co-ordinator.

Alongside being awarded SSS Volunteer of the Year, Heather was the recent recipient of the Len Burnett Trophy at Heriot-Watt University Sports Union Blues and Volunteer Awards. This award was presented for her significant contribution to the Sports Union and her clubs throughout her time at University.
